Temple: Cambodia’s Remote Khmer Monument

A quiet 12th-century temple complex set deep in Cambodia’s northern forests.

CambodiaUpdated 21 October 2026

Why Visit Temple

Far from the crowds of Angkor, Temple offers visitors an authentic encounter with Khmer architecture amid jungle surroundings. Built during the Angkorian period, its sandstone towers and intricate bas-reliefs remain remarkably intact, giving a clear sense of the empire’s reach into remote provinces.

What to See and Do

Start at the central sanctuary and walk outward through the concentric galleries. Look for carved apsaras, scenes from the Ramayana, and the distinctive lintels above doorways. A short climb to the upper level rewards with views across the forest canopy. Allow two to three hours for a unhurried visit, including time to photograph the play of light on the stone at different hours.

How to Get There

The temple lies roughly 80 km north of Siem Reap. Most travelers hire a car and driver for the day; the journey takes about two hours on paved roads followed by a short dirt track. Motorbike rentals are possible for experienced riders comfortable with rural conditions. No public transport reaches the site directly.

Best Time to Visit

November through February offers the coolest, driest weather and clearest skies for photography. Arrive at opening to enjoy the site before any tour groups. The rainy season (June–October) brings lush greenery and fewer visitors but also muddy access roads.

What’s Nearby

  • Banteay Chhmar – another large, little-visited temple complex 45 km to the west.
  • Preah Vihear – a dramatic clifftop temple two hours farther north.
  • Local villages along the way offer simple homestays and fresh-cooked Khmer meals.

Visitor tips

  • Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes; the temple grounds have uneven stones and little shade.
  • Hire a local guide at the entrance for deeper context on the carvings and history.
  • Combine the visit with an overnight in nearby Preah Vihear province to avoid a long same-day return to Siem Reap.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a ticket in advance?+

Tickets are purchased on-site; no advance booking is required for this remote temple.

Are there facilities like toilets or food at the site?+

Only basic toilets are available. Bring water and snacks or eat in the nearest village before arriving.

How long should I plan to spend at Temple?+

Two to three hours is ideal to explore the main structures without rushing.

Is the site suitable for children or elderly visitors?+

The uneven terrain and steps can be challenging; families with small children or limited mobility may prefer flatter sites closer to Siem Reap.
