Statue of Daun Penh: Exploring Phnom Penh’s Legendary Founder
Honor Cambodia’s capital origins at the Statue of Daun Penh, a quiet riverside monument tied to the city’s founding…
A rugged overlook on Koh Rong where dramatic cliffs meet the Gulf of Thailand at golden hour.
Sunset Rock sits on the western edge of Koh Rong, Cambodia, offering a clear panorama across the Gulf of Thailand. The viewpoint rewards visitors with unobstructed sightlines to the horizon and distant islands, especially vivid during the dry season when skies stay clear.
The rock formation creates a natural platform roughly 30 meters above the water. From this spot you can watch fishing boats return at dusk and see the sky shift through orange and pink tones. The area remains largely undeveloped, preserving a wild feel compared with busier beaches on the island.
Most travelers arrive by ferry or speedboat from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong’s main pier. From the pier, local boats or a short hike along coastal paths lead to the viewpoint trailhead. The final approach involves a moderate climb over roots and rock; allow 45 minutes each way. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water, as shade is limited once you leave the tree line.
November through April brings the most reliable weather for sunset viewing. Arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset to secure a good vantage point and watch the light change. Evenings can turn breezy, so bring a light layer. During the wet season, brief downpours are common but often clear quickly, sometimes producing dramatic cloud formations.
Facilities at Sunset Rock itself are nonexistent, so plan accordingly. Koh Rong’s main village offers guesthouses, restaurants, and small markets. Mobile coverage is patchy on the trail; download offline maps before setting out.

The trail is moderate, with some steep sections and exposed roots. Most fit visitors manage it in under an hour, but good shoes help on the rocky parts.
Overnight camping is not officially permitted and there are no facilities. Most visitors return to Koh Rong village before nightfall.
The climb involves uneven terrain and drop-offs near the edge, so it is best for older children under close supervision.
