Sea Island, British Columbia: Parks, Aviation and Quiet Delta Views

Explore the natural parks and airport gateway of Sea Island in Richmond, BC, just minutes from downtown Vancouver.

Why Sea Island Is Worth Visiting

Sea Island sits in the Fraser River delta between Richmond and Vancouver, offering a rare mix of protected natural areas and the world’s gateway to British Columbia. While Vancouver International Airport occupies much of its western half, the eastern and southern shores remain quiet parkland where visitors can watch shorebirds, walk dikes, and enjoy unobstructed views of the North Shore mountains without the crowds of Stanley Park.

Getting There

Drive via the Arthur Laing Bridge from Vancouver or the Moray Channel Bridge from Richmond. Public transit users can take the Canada Line to YVR–Airport station then connect by bus or the free shuttle to Iona Beach. Cyclists appreciate the flat dike trails that link the island to the larger Richmond trail network. Allow extra time during peak airport hours for road congestion on the bridges.

Things to See and Do

Iona Beach Regional Park

The long jetty extends nearly three kilometres into the Strait of Georgia, creating one of the best shorebird-watching sites in the Lower Mainland. At low tide the beach reveals sandbars perfect for sunset photography. Facilities are limited to basic washrooms and picnic tables, so bring water.

McDonald Beach Park and Sea Island Conservation Area

These adjacent sites offer calm riverfront paths for walking and cycling. The conservation area protects tidal wetlands that host migrating waterfowl; interpretive signs explain the delta ecosystem. Dogs are permitted on leash in designated zones.

Airport Observation

Even non-flyers enjoy the public viewing areas at YVR’s domestic terminal where wide-body aircraft take off and land over the water. The adjacent jetty provides an unusual foreground for plane-spotting photos.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall bring the greatest variety of migratory birds. Summer offers the longest days for walking the jetty and the mildest temperatures for cycling. Winter visits are quieter but can be windy; dress in layers. The island remains accessible year-round, though some trails may flood during king tides in December and January.

Nearby Attractions

Combine a Sea Island visit with Steveston’s historic fishing village and cannery museum, a 15-minute drive south. The Canada Line provides quick access to Richmond’s night market in summer or to downtown Vancouver in under 30 minutes. Golfers will find several public courses on adjacent Lulu Island.

Visitor tips

  • Pack binoculars and tide tables for the best experience at Iona Beach jetty.
  • Use the Canada Line and connecting bus rather than airport parking if your main goal is the parks.
  • Check Environment Canada tide charts before walking the full length of the Iona jetty to avoid being cut off.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sea Island only the airport?+

No. While YVR occupies the western portion, large sections remain protected parkland and conservation areas open to the public.

Can I visit the parks without flying?+

Yes. Public transit, driving, and cycling all reach Iona Beach and McDonald Beach directly; you do not need an airline ticket.

Are there restaurants on Sea Island?+

Dining is limited to the airport terminals. For local seafood and cafu00e9s, continue to nearby Steveston or Richmond city centre.

Is Sea Island good for birdwatching?+

It is one of the top shorebird sites in Metro Vancouver, especially along the Iona jetty during migration seasons.

How long should I spend on Sea Island?+

Most visitors combine a two-to-three-hour walk on the jetty with an hour at McDonald Beach, making it an easy half-day outing from Vancouver.
