Rooibock Laagte: Exploring Botswana’s Remote Kalahari River

This seasonal waterway in central Botswana offers quiet wildlife encounters and authentic desert river scenery for self-sufficient travelers.

Why Visit Rooibock Laagte

Rooibock Laagte is a seasonal river channel cutting through Botswana’s central Kalahari sands. During the rains it briefly carries water that draws antelope, giraffe and smaller mammals to its banks, while the surrounding mopane and acacia woodland supports a surprising variety of birds. The river’s modest scale and lack of infrastructure keep visitor numbers low, making it ideal for those seeking solitude rather than crowded safari lodges.

What to See and Do

Travelers typically drive the sandy tracks that follow the riverbed, stopping at natural pans that hold water longest. Birdwatching is rewarding after rain when migrant species arrive; look for sandgrouse, hornbills and occasional raptors. At night the clear skies offer excellent stargazing away from light pollution. Short walks along the raised banks reveal tracks of nocturnal animals and the occasional quiver tree or shepherd’s tree.

Getting There

Access is via 4×4 vehicle only. Most visitors approach from the Ghanzi–Maun road, turning east onto graded tracks that become progressively sandier. Fuel, water and spare parts must be carried; there are no services once you leave the main road. GPS coordinates place the central section near -20.3333, 21.25, but local tracks shift with each rainy season so a recent satellite image or local guide is useful.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal window is the end of the rainy season (March to May) when water still lingers in pans but daytime temperatures are moderate. June to August offers cooler nights and clearer game viewing, though the riverbed is usually dry. Avoid the peak heat of October and November unless prepared for extreme conditions.

Nearby Attractions

  • Central Kalahari Game Reserve – vast wilderness with black-maned lions and meerkat colonies
  • Ghanzi farming communities – opportunities to learn about San tracking traditions
  • Deception Valley – dramatic fossil riverbed scenery a day’s drive north

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least 20 litres of extra water per person and enough fuel for a 300 km round trip beyond the last reliable station.
  • Travel in convoy or with a satellite communicator; mobile coverage is absent for most of the route.
  • Pack a high-lift jack, recovery boards and a full tyre repair kitu2014sand and thorn punctures are common.
