Statue of Daun Penh: Exploring Phnom Penh’s Legendary Founder
Honor Cambodia’s capital origins at the Statue of Daun Penh, a quiet riverside monument tied to the city’s founding…
Climb to this windswept rocky overlook for sweeping Gulf of Thailand vistas and a taste of southern Cambodia’s wilder side.
Perched on a coastal ridge in Cambodia’s southwest, Rocks Windy Stones delivers unobstructed views across the Gulf of Thailand and the jagged outlines of nearby islands. Constant sea breezes sculpt the low-lying vegetation and keep the air cool even on hot days, making the site feel dramatically different from the calmer beaches below.
Follow the short but steep trail from the parking area up through scattered boulders to the main viewpoint platform. The highest rocks offer 360-degree panoramas: fishing boats on the horizon, distant Thai islands on clear days, and the curve of the Cambodian coastline. Photographers favor late afternoon when the low sun highlights the textures of the weathered stone. Birdwatchers often spot sea eagles riding the thermals. Bring a light jacket; the wind can be surprisingly strong.
Two informal paths branch off the main viewpoint. One leads to a lower ledge popular for picnics; the other climbs to a secondary outcrop with fewer visitors and even stronger gusts. Both routes take 15–20 minutes round-trip over uneven rock.
The viewpoint lies roughly 25 km west of Kampot along Route 33 and a signed dirt track. Most visitors rent a motorbike or hire a driver with a tuk-tuk for the final 4 km of rough road. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended after heavy rain. No public transport reaches the site directly.
November through March brings the steadiest breezes and clearest skies. Arrive before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m. to avoid midday heat and to catch softer light. The site remains accessible year-round, though the track can become muddy during the May–October wet season.
