Puig d’en Cires: Hiking Ibiza’s Quiet Northern Summit

A rewarding half-day hike through Mallorca’s Serra de Llevant offering sweeping Mediterranean views without the crowds of the Tramuntana.
Located in the eastern Serra de Llevant range, Puig de son Manxo rises to 363 metres and delivers unobstructed panoramas across the Bay of Alcúdia, the rugged coastline near Capdepera, and inland almond groves. Its modest height and relatively gentle trails make it an ideal introduction to Mallorca’s quieter interior mountains.
Drive to the small hamlet of Son Manxo, reached via the MA-15 between Artà and Capdepera. Park in the signed lay-by at the start of the gravel track (39.5805 N, 3.3219 E). From here a well-marked path climbs steadily through pine woodland and open scrub, reaching the summit trig point in roughly 45–60 minutes. No public transport serves the trailhead directly; a taxi from Artà takes about 15 minutes.
March to May and September to November offer the most comfortable temperatures and clear visibility. Summer hikes are possible but start at dawn to avoid heat and afternoon thunderstorms. Winter days can be bright yet windy; carry a light windproof layer.
The main out-and-back trail is approximately 4 km with 250 m of elevation gain. After the initial gentle climb the path steepens briefly before levelling along a limestone ridge. At the summit a stone shelter and panoramic views reward the effort. The descent follows the same route; no loop options exist without crossing private land.
Look for endemic Balearic cyclamen in spring, wild olive trees, and occasional sightings of booted eagles circling the ridge. The area is part of a protected natural park, so stay on marked paths.

It is rated moderate: steady uphill walking on a clear path suitable for most reasonably fit adults and older children.
The trail is open to mountain bikes and trail runners, though the rocky upper section is technical and best attempted on foot.
Dogs are permitted if kept on a lead; please remove any waste as the mountain is within a protected park.
Limited shade under pines near the start; bring all drinking water as none is available en route.
Descend immediately if clouds build or wind strengthens; the exposed ridge offers little shelter.
