Poblat Talaiòtic Els Antigors: A Timeless Talayotic Village in Mallorca

Understanding the Site

Poblat Talaiòtic Els Antigors is a compact prehistoric village that dates to the Talayotic period, roughly 1000–500 BCE. The settlement features the characteristic circular stone towers known as talayots, along with rectangular dwellings, a possible sanctuary area, and defensive walls that once protected the community. Unlike larger, more commercialized sites on the island, Els Antigors remains intimate, allowing visitors to walk among the ruins without crowds and to appreciate the careful dry-stone construction techniques used by the island’s earliest inhabitants.

What to See and Do

Begin at the main talayot, a solid circular structure that once served as a watchtower and communal landmark. From its elevated position you can trace the layout of the surrounding houses, many of which retain their original doorways and internal divisions. Look for the large flat stones that formed roofs and the smaller stones used to fill gaps, demonstrating sophisticated building skills. A short path leads to a second, smaller talayot and the remains of what archaeologists believe was a ritual enclosure. Take time to examine the cyclopean masonry—massive blocks fitted without mortar—that still stands after more than two millennia.

Because the site is small, most visitors spend 45 to 90 minutes exploring on foot. Bring a camera for the dramatic views across the flat agricultural plain toward the sea, and consider sketching the stone patterns to better notice construction details.

How to Get There

The village lies a few kilometers inland from the southern coast of Mallorca, near the town of Ses Salines. Renting a car is the most practical option; the site is reached by a short, well-marked country lane off the Ma-6040 road. Public buses run between Palma and Ses Salines, but from there a taxi or bicycle ride of about 15 minutes is required. Cyclists appreciate the flat terrain and quiet lanes that connect the site to nearby beaches.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal year-round. In summer the low sun highlights the texture of the stones and temperatures remain comfortable outside peak midday heat. Spring and autumn offer mild weather and fewer visitors, while winter visits are possible on clear days when the light is crisp and the surrounding almond orchards may be in bloom. Wear sturdy shoes; the ground is uneven and can be slippery after rain.

Nearby Attractions

Combine your visit with the salt flats and flamingo colonies at Parc Natural de Ses Salines, only a short drive away. The charming port of Colònia de Sant Jordi offers seafood restaurants and boat trips to nearby islets. Further afield, the dramatic coastal cliffs of Cala Llombards and the historic center of Santanyí provide pleasant half-day extensions.
