Pico Mirueñu rises above the Sierra de Sueve, a compact limestone range in eastern Asturias that separates the Cantabrian Sea from the inland valleys. The summit delivers wide views across the Bay of Biscay to the Picos de Europa on clear days, while the lower slopes remain cloaked in beech and oak forest that changes color dramatically with the seasons.
Most visitors start from the Collado de la Cruz de Cuera parking area near the village of Alles. A well-marked path climbs steadily through mixed woodland before emerging onto open meadows and limestone pavement. The final section follows a gentle ridge to the trig point at the top. The round-trip typically takes three to four hours and involves moderate elevation gain with no technical difficulty for fit walkers.
In spring the meadows host wild daffodils and orchids; autumn brings spectacular beech color. Keep an eye out for griffon vultures circling the cliffs and, with luck, the small herds of Asturcón ponies that graze the higher pastures.
The mountain lies roughly halfway between Gijón and Llanes. From the A-8 motorway, take the exit for Ribadesella and follow the N-632 then local roads toward Alles. Public transport is limited, so most travelers arrive by car; the final approach road is narrow but paved.
Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable weather and accessible trails. Winter visits are possible after snowmelt but require micro-spikes and extra caution on icy sections. Early morning starts help avoid the frequent afternoon cloud that can obscure the sea views.
Combine the hike with a visit to the dramatic beaches at Ribadesella or the prehistoric Tito Bustillo caves. The nearby town of Cangas de Onís provides easy access to the western Picos de Europa if you have extra days.
