Canto del Oso: A Rugged Hiking Peak in Asturias
Explore the dramatic ridges and sweeping views of Canto del Oso, an accessible yet uncrowded summit in the Cantabrian…
A rewarding half-day hike in eastern Asturias that rewards with sweeping coastal and Picos de Europa panoramas.
At 1,103 metres, Pico La Cruz rises above the rolling hills between the Asturian coast and the western edge of the Picos de Europa. Its modest height makes it accessible, yet the 360-degree outlook takes in the Bay of Biscay, the green valleys of the Sella and Guadamía rivers, and the jagged limestone peaks to the south. Unlike the crowded trails of the Picos, this summit sees few visitors, offering a quiet day in nature with wildflowers in spring and golden light in autumn.
The trailhead lies near the village of La Cruz, roughly 8 km inland from Colunga. From Gijón or Oviedo, take the A-8 motorway east and exit at Colunga, then follow the AS-257 toward Villaviciosa before turning south on the narrow LU-1 local road. A small parking area sits beside a cattle grid; from there a well-marked path climbs steadily through oak and beech woods before emerging onto open meadows.
Buses run from Oviedo to Colunga; a taxi or 90-minute walk is then required to reach the trailhead. Most visitors therefore rent a car for the day.
Late April through June and September to mid-October bring mild temperatures and clear visibility. July and August can be warm and hazy; winter often leaves the upper slopes icy and the access road muddy. Aim for early morning starts to enjoy the summit before afternoon clouds build.
The out-and-back hike covers about 9 km with 550 m of elevation gain and takes three to four hours for most walkers. Highlights include the trig point at the summit, a small iron cross, and a natural viewpoint over the Ría de Villaviciosa estuary. Bring binoculars for griffon vultures and the occasional golden eagle. In clear weather the Cantabrian Sea glitters to the north while the Peña Santa massif dominates the southern horizon.

The route is moderate; good fitness and proper footwear are needed, but no technical climbing or scrambling is required.
Older children accustomed to hill walking manage it well, but the steep final section and lack of facilities make it less ideal for very young kids.
Dogs are permitted but must remain on a lead; cattle graze the upper meadows and there is no shade or water on the final ascent.
Layers, a waterproof shell, and trail running shoes or boots; temperatures can drop quickly and rain is common.
No facilities exist at the start; the nearest bars and restaurants are in Colunga, 10 minutes by car.
