Tucked in the hills of Asturias, Pico de Carbajosa offers hikers a straightforward summit day with expansive views across rolling valleys and distant peaks of the Cantabrian Mountains. Unlike the busier trails of the Picos de Europa, this peak provides a quieter experience where you can enjoy wildflower meadows, grazing cattle, and the sound of mountain streams without crowds.

Getting There

The mountain lies in western Asturias near the border with León. Most visitors base themselves in the village of Villablino or the larger town of Ponferrada and drive the final stretch on winding mountain roads. From the trailhead parking area, a clear path climbs steadily through beech woods and open pastures. The route is well-marked with occasional cairns and requires no technical climbing, though good boots and a map are essential once you leave the lower meadows.

The Summit Hike

The ascent gains roughly 600 meters and takes three to four hours round-trip for most walkers. Along the way you pass limestone outcrops and seasonal springs that feed the upper reaches of the Sil River. At the top, a modest trig point marks the 360-degree panorama that includes the snow-streaked ridges of the Picos de Europa on clear days and the green valleys of Babia to the south.

Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable conditions for hiking. Snow can linger into May on north-facing slopes, while July and August bring warm days and occasional afternoon thunderstorms. Autumn colors in the beech woods are spectacular but can arrive with sudden cold snaps, so carry layers.

Flora and Wildlife

In June and July the slopes are carpeted with gentians, orchids, and purple bellflowers. Look for chamois on the higher ledges and griffon vultures riding thermals overhead. The area remains lightly grazed by Asturian mountain ponies and cows, so close gates behind you and keep dogs under control.

After descending, many travelers continue to the glacial lakes of Somiedo Natural Park or the historic mining villages around Villablino. The dramatic gorges of the River Luna lie a short drive east and offer easy riverside walks for those wanting a gentler day.
