Cima Campuna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
Venture into the quiet plateaus and panoramic trails of this lesser-known corner of Gran Sasso National Park.
Piani Uguali sits high in the Abruzzo Apennines within Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, offering hikers broad meadows framed by the jagged peaks of the Gran Sasso massif. The name refers to a series of level highland basins reached after steady climbs from valley roads near Pietracamela and Fano Adriano. These grassy expanses provide striking views of Corno Grande and the surrounding limestone ridges while remaining far quieter than the more famous Campo Imperatore plateau to the east.
Several well-marked paths radiate from the central meadows. The most popular route climbs gently from the hamlet of Prati di Tivo, crossing beech forest before emerging onto the open basins; the full loop to the summit ridge above takes four to five hours. Shorter walks stay within the meadows themselves, ideal for families or those seeking wildflower meadows in early summer. In autumn the same slopes turn golden with beech leaves, while winter visitors can access the area via snowshoes when the access road is clear. Birdwatchers often spot golden eagles and choughs soaring overhead, and the meadows support herds of Apennine chamois visible from a respectful distance.
Most visitors drive from L’Aquila (about 45 minutes) or Teramo (30 minutes) via the winding SP24 or SP8 roads, parking at the trailhead near Prati di Tivo. Public transport is limited; a few regional buses reach nearby villages, after which a taxi or long walk is required. Once at the meadows there are no facilities, so hikers must be self-sufficient with food, water, and navigation apps or paper maps.
Late May through early July brings peak wildflowers and stable weather, while September and October offer clear air and fewer insects. Snow lingers into May on north-facing slopes, and sudden thunderstorms are common in July and August; always check the forecast before setting out.
Combine a visit with the cable car at Prati di Tivo for easier access to higher ridges, or continue to the ancient village of Pietracamela with its stone houses and small ethnographic museum. The dramatic gorge of the Valle del Venacquaro lies a short drive south and offers additional day hikes.

A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
The meadows themselves are relatively flat and accessible via moderate forest tracks, but reaching them requires a steady climb; beginners should choose the shorter out-and-back options from Prati di Tivo.
No mountain huts exist at Piani Uguali; the nearest accommodations are in Pietracamela or the ski village of Prati di Tivo below the trailhead.
Yes, but only with snowshoes or skis and when the access road is open; avalanche risk exists on steeper slopes above the meadows.
Dogs are permitted if kept on a leash; remember that livestock graze the meadows in summer and chamois may be present.
Descend immediately to the treeline; the open meadows offer no shelter from lightning or high winds common in the Apennines.
