Koh Sdach: Cambodia’s Quiet Island Escape in Kiri Sakor
Discover pristine beaches, clear waters, and a laid-back fishing community on this remote Cambodian island.
Watch world-class circus performances and explore an arts school that empowers Cambodian youth through creativity and training.
Phare Ponleu Selpak stands out as one of Cambodia’s most distinctive cultural attractions. Located on the outskirts of Battambang, this nonprofit arts organization combines circus training, visual arts, theater, and music education. Founded in the 1990s by Cambodian refugees and artists, it primarily serves local children and young adults from underprivileged backgrounds, turning creative skills into pathways for education and employment.
Evening circus shows form the centerpiece for most visitors. Aerial acrobatics, juggling, tightrope walking, and clowning blend traditional Khmer storytelling with contemporary techniques. The performances take place in a purpose-built big top and run roughly 75 minutes. Before or after the show, visitors can stroll the campus to view student murals, paintings, and sculptures displayed across open-air galleries.
Daytime visitors may observe open training sessions or join short workshops when scheduled. The on-site gallery and small café provide quiet spaces to learn more about the school’s social mission and purchase student-made crafts.
The campus sits about 2 kilometers west of central Battambang. Most travelers arrive by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or motorbike taxi. The flat terrain makes cycling an easy option; many guesthouses rent bikes. Drivers can follow Route 5 west and turn south at the marked sign for the school. Public transport is limited, so arranging a return ride after evening shows is advisable.
November through April offers the most reliable weather for outdoor performances. The dry season brings cooler evenings and fewer rain interruptions. Shows run year-round, but the rainy season months can see occasional cancellations. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to secure good seats and enjoy the pre-show atmosphere.
Combine a visit with Battambang’s other highlights. The bamboo train at Wat Banan offers a short countryside ride, while the colonial-era architecture along the Sangker River provides pleasant walking. The hilltop temple of Wat Ek Phnom and the nearby bat caves at sunset make logical half-day extensions. Many travelers base themselves in Battambang for two or three nights to explore the province at a relaxed pace.
