Why Peñata Stands Out

Routes and What to Expect
Most visitors start from the small village of Noreña or the parking area near the Ermita de San Miguel. The main trail climbs steadily through meadows and scattered hazel groves before reaching the broad, rocky top in roughly two hours. A shorter, steeper variant follows an old cart track that joins the main path after the first kilometer. Both routes are well marked with yellow-and-white paint flashes; no technical scrambling is required.
Flora and Wildlife
In spring the slopes are carpeted with wild daffodils and asphodel. Summer brings butterflies and the occasional red kite riding thermals above the ridge. Autumn colors the chestnut woods gold and rust, while winter offers crisp air and occasional light snow that rarely lingers more than a day or two.
Getting There
From Oviedo, take the AS-246 toward Noreña and continue on the narrow road that climbs toward the ermita; a small gravel turnout serves as the trailhead. Buses run hourly from Oviedo to Noreña, after which a 25-minute walk reaches the start of the path. Drivers coming from Gijón can use the A-64 motorway and exit at Pola de Siero.
Best Time to Visit
April through June and September through October give the mildest temperatures and clearest views. July and August are hotter and busier with local walkers; winter visits are possible but require checking for ice on the final rocky section.
