Peña Mayor: Hiking Asturias’ Wild Peak with Sweeping Mountain Views

Why Peña Mayor Stands Out

Peña Mayor rises as a distinctive limestone peak in Asturias, offering hikers a direct route into the region’s wild interior. Its slopes mix dense Atlantic beech woods with open limestone ridges that deliver clear sightlines across rolling farmland toward the Picos de Europa and, on clear days, the Cantabrian coast. The mountain rewards steady effort with a compact but satisfying summit experience rather than crowds or infrastructure.

Trails and What to Expect on the Hike

Most visitors start from the Collado de la Corra area and follow a well-marked path that climbs steadily through forest before breaking onto rocky ground. The route is straightforward yet steep in places, crossing limestone pavements and occasional grassy meadows where chamois may appear at dawn. Allow four to five hours round-trip for the full ascent and descent, including time at the summit for photographs and rest. Carry plenty of water; few reliable springs exist above the treeline.

Getting There

Reach the trailhead by car from Oviedo in roughly one hour via the A-64 and local roads toward Nava and Infiesto. Limited parking exists at the pass; arrive early in peak season. Public transport is sparse, so most walkers combine a bus to a nearby village with a taxi or pre-arranged lift to the start point. Once on foot, the path is clear and requires no technical equipment in summer.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable conditions, with wildflowers in May and June and milder temperatures through September. Winter snow can linger on north-facing slopes into April, and summer thunderstorms arrive quickly in the afternoons. Always check the local forecast before setting out, as fog can reduce visibility on the upper ridges.

Nearby Attractions

Combine the hike with a visit to the traditional villages of the Nalón valley, where cider houses and Romanesque churches provide a cultural contrast to the mountain day. The Redes Natural Park lies immediately east, offering additional trails through old-growth forest and reservoirs for those extending their stay.
