Peña del Villar rises gently above the green valleys between Villaviciosa and Ribadesella. Its modest height delivers wide views of the Cantabrian Sea to the north and the rolling foothills of the Sierra del Sueve to the south. The mountain remains far less visited than the Picos de Europa, so hikers often have the grassy summit and limestone outcrops to themselves.

How to Reach the Trailhead

The most practical starting point is the small village of Villar, reached by the AS-267 road that links Villaviciosa with the coast. Limited parking sits beside the village church. From there a clear track climbs steadily through meadows and mixed woodland. The full round-trip to the summit and back takes three to four hours at a relaxed pace.

Routes and Highlights on the Mountain

The standard path follows an old livestock route that zig-zags up the eastern flank. After thirty minutes the trees open into flower-rich pastures where cattle graze in summer. Higher up, limestone pavements give way to the final rocky scramble, rewarded by a 360-degree panorama that stretches from the Ría de Villaviciosa estuary to the distant Picos de Europa on clear days.

Side paths branch off toward smaller viewpoints and a ruined shepherd’s hut. In spring the slopes are carpeted with wild daffodils and orchids; in autumn the beech woods turn gold. Birdwatchers often spot griffon vultures circling the cliffs and, in winter, occasional alpine accentors.

April through June and September through October offer the most comfortable temperatures and fewer clouds. July and August can be humid; winter visits are possible but require microspikes after snowfall. The mountain is accessible year-round, though the upper meadows turn muddy after heavy rain.

After descending, continue ten minutes by car to the coastal village of Ribadesella for its beach and prehistoric Tito Bustillo Cave. Inland, the cider houses of Villaviciosa provide a classic Asturian lunch. The Sueve Natural Park lies just south, offering longer ridge walks for those wanting more time on foot.
