Red Chair Viewpoint: Iconic Mountain Panorama in Alberta’s Rockies
A short hike to a striking red chair yields sweeping views of the Canadian Rockies near Jasper.
Experience the peaceful waters of Patricia Lake framed by Pyramid Mountain in Alberta's Jasper National Park.
Patricia Lake sits quietly in Jasper National Park, offering one of the most accessible yet uncrowded viewpoints in the Canadian Rockies. The calm surface mirrors Pyramid Mountain and surrounding peaks, creating classic alpine scenery without the crowds found at nearby Maligne Lake or Athabasca Falls.
From Jasper townsite, follow Pyramid Lake Road north for about 5 km. A short, well-marked path leads from the roadside pullout directly to the viewpoint overlooking the lake’s eastern shore. The drive takes under 10 minutes; the walk is flat and suitable for most visitors. Parking is limited, so arrive early in peak season.
Late spring through early fall provides the clearest reflections and open access. June and September offer fewer people and dramatic light on the peaks. Winter visits require snowshoes or skis and careful avalanche awareness on surrounding slopes.
Stand at the viewpoint for sweeping photographs of the lake and Pyramid Mountain. Continue along the lakeshore trail for additional angles and opportunities to spot loons or elk. The area is ideal for quiet picnics or simply sitting with the mountain panorama. Strong swimmers sometimes enter the cold water from the viewpoint area, though the lake remains chilly year-round.
Cell service is spotty. Carry water, insect repellent, and layers for rapid weather changes typical of the Rockies. Bears frequent the area, so travel in groups and make noise on trails.
