Statue of Daun Penh: Exploring Phnom Penh’s Legendary Founder
Honor Cambodia’s capital origins at the Statue of Daun Penh, a quiet riverside monument tied to the city’s founding…
Climb to this little-known lookout in Koh Kong Province for sweeping views over jungle canopy and the distant Gulf of Thailand.
The Observation Spot sits deep in the Cardamom Mountains near the southern edge of Botum Sakor National Park. Most visitors reach it by hiring a local driver with a sturdy pickup or motorbike from Koh Kong town, roughly 90 minutes away on mostly unpaved roads. The final stretch is a steep, rocky track that requires high clearance; four-wheel-drive is strongly recommended in the wet season. GPS coordinates 11.4059368, 103.4789090 lead directly to the small parking area.
A short, steep trail of about 300 meters ends at a simple wooden platform perched above the treetops. From here the view stretches across unbroken forest to the blue line of the Gulf of Thailand and, on clear days, the outlines of Koh Kong and Koh Sdach islands. Sunrise and late afternoon are the most rewarding times, when light rakes across the ridges and mist lingers in the valleys. Bring binoculars for hornbills and gibbons that move through the canopy below.
November through February offers the clearest skies and coolest temperatures. March to May is hotter and the track dustier, while June to October brings heavy rain that can make the access road impassable. Plan an early start to avoid afternoon clouds that often roll in from the sea.
Combine the viewpoint with a night in the national park or a boat tour for a full day of exploration.
