Why Visit the Moshashambe River
The Moshashambe River winds through open savanna and acacia woodland in Botswana’s Central District, offering visitors a calm alternative to busier safari destinations. Its seasonal flow supports patches of riverine vegetation that attract birds and small mammals, while the surrounding countryside gives a genuine sense of rural Botswana life.
What to See and Do
Walk or drive slowly along the river’s eastern and western banks to spot hornbills, lilac-breasted rollers and occasional fish eagles. Early morning or late afternoon light is ideal for photography of the flat-topped acacias and the wide, sandy riverbed. Local herders sometimes pass with cattle, providing quiet scenes of daily life. For longer stays, bring binoculars and a field guide; the river corridor is part of a larger dryland ecosystem that changes dramatically between the green season and the dry months.
Practical Activities
- Self-guided birdwatching from the vehicle or on foot along established tracks
- Picnics on the shaded banks during cooler months
- Short drives to nearby villages to learn about Tswana culture and traditional cattle posts
Getting There
The river lies roughly 60 km southeast of Francistown. Most visitors travel the A1 tar road south from Francistown, then turn east onto gravel district roads that lead toward the river. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended once you leave the main highway, especially after rain. Fuel is available in Francistown and larger villages along the A1; carry extra water and a spare tyre.
Best Time to Visit
The cooler, dry months from May to October offer the most comfortable temperatures and clearer access along the banks. From November to April the river may hold water after thunderstorms, but tracks can become impassable and temperatures are high. Wildlife viewing is steadier in the dry season when animals concentrate near remaining water points.
Nearby Places Worth Exploring
Combine a visit with Serowe, the Bangwato capital and home of the Khama III Memorial Museum, or continue south toward the Tswapong Hills for hiking and rock pools. Francistown itself provides comfortable lodging, supermarkets and vehicle services before heading into the district.
