Monte Pettinascura: Hiking the Remote Granite Summit in Calabria’s Sila

Explore the quiet trails, ancient beech forests, and sweeping views from Monte Pettinascura, a lesser-known peak in Sila National Park.

CalabriaUpdated 17 October 2026

Why Monte Pettinascura Stands Out

Monte Pettinascura rises to 1,693 metres in the Sila Grande plateau of Calabria, offering hikers a granite summit with 360-degree views over dense beech and pine woods, distant Apennine ridges, and the Ionian Sea on clear days. Unlike busier peaks in the same national park, this mountain rewards visitors with solitude and a genuine sense of wild Calabria.

Getting There

The nearest major airport is Lamezia Terme, roughly 90 kilometres away. From there, rent a car for the drive via the A2 motorway exit at Cosenza Nord, then follow signs toward Camigliatello Silano and the SP108 into the park. Public buses reach Camigliatello, but onward travel to trailheads requires a taxi or pre-arranged transfer. Park in the small lot near the Fossiata forest road; from here a marked path climbs steadily through mixed woodland to the summit ridge.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable conditions for hiking. Snow lingers into May at this elevation, while summer brings comfortable daytime temperatures around 20 °C. Autumn colours peak in October. Winter visits are possible only with crampons and local guidance.

Things to Do on the Mountain

The main route is a 7-kilometre out-and-back trail that gains 400 metres and takes three to four hours round-trip. Along the way you pass limestone outcrops, seasonal streams, and the occasional roe deer. At the summit cairn, linger for photographs and scan for griffon vultures riding thermals. For a longer day, continue along the ridge toward Monte Curcio before descending via the eastern flank. Birdwatchers should carry binoculars; the area hosts golden eagles and black woodpeckers.

Nearby Attractions

Combine the hike with a visit to Lago Cecita, 15 kilometres south, for a lakeside picnic. The small town of Camigliatello Silano offers mountain cheese producers and a narrow-gauge railway museum. Further afield, the medieval village of San Giovanni in Fiore provides a cultural contrast with its abbey and traditional weaving workshops.

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least two litres of water per person; reliable springs are scarce on the upper slopes.
  • Download offline maps before leaving mobile coverage; the main trail is well marked but side paths can confuse.
  • Wear sturdy boots with good grip; the granite summit can be slippery even in dry weather.
