Cima Campuna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
A guide to trails, views, and practical access on this 1,820-metre peak in Italy’s Sirente-Velino Regional Park.
Monte Mutri rises sharply above the Aterno Valley in western Abruzzo, offering hikers a compact but rewarding climb through beech forest to open limestone slopes with 360-degree views of the Gran Sasso massif to the north and the Sirente plateau to the south. Unlike better-known peaks in the national parks, it sees far fewer visitors, preserving a quiet, wild atmosphere where golden eagles and Apennine wolves still roam.
The standard route begins at the hamlet of Fontecchio (roughly 700 m) and follows a well-marked path through mixed woodland before emerging onto grassy ridges. The ascent gains about 1,100 m over 8–9 km round-trip and takes most fit walkers five to six hours. The final section crosses loose scree; sure-footedness is required but no technical gear is needed in summer. At the summit a modest cairn and cross mark the high point, with sweeping vistas across the Valle Subequana and, on clear days, as far as the Adriatic.
The nearest rail station is L’Aquila, from which a regional bus runs to Fontecchio three times daily. Most visitors arrive by car via the SS5 highway from Rome (about two hours) or Pescara (90 minutes). Free parking is available at the trailhead just above Fontecchio’s cemetery. No public transport reaches the higher trailheads.
Late May through early October offers the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers into May on north-facing slopes; July and August can be hot and dry at lower elevations. Autumn brings vivid beech colour and fewer insects. Always check the regional park’s avalanche bulletin after October.
Combine a Monte Mutri hike with a visit to the medieval hill town of Castelvecchio Subequo, 15 minutes away, or the dramatic gorge of the Gole di San Venanzio. The high plateaus of the Sirente-Velino park, including the village of Ovindoli with its chairlift access, lie within a 40-minute drive.
