Colle della Chiusa: Hiking the Quiet Mountain Pass in Abruzzo
Explore panoramic trails, wildflower meadows, and remote Apennine views at this peaceful mountain pass near the Gran…
A lesser-known peak offering sweeping Apennine views and peaceful trails just beyond the Gran Sasso massif.
Monte Mucchio rises in the Monti della Laga range of Abruzzo, part of the larger Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Its rounded summit delivers unobstructed panoramas across the Apennines, from the jagged Gran Sasso peaks to the rolling hills toward the Adriatic. Unlike busier trailheads near Campo Imperatore, this mountain sees far fewer visitors, making it ideal for hikers seeking solitude amid beech forests and open meadows.
The main route starts from the hamlet of Ceppo and follows a well-marked path through mixed woodland before emerging onto grassy slopes. The ascent is steady rather than steep, passing seasonal streams and alpine flowers in late spring. At the summit, a simple cairn marks the high point; on clear days you can trace the spine of the park all the way to Monte Gorzano. Birdwatchers often spot golden eagles and choughs circling the ridges. In autumn the beech woods turn deep gold, offering a different but equally rewarding experience.
Late May through early October provides the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers into May on north-facing slopes, while October brings the first frosts. Summer days can be warm at lower elevations but remain comfortable on the ridge; carry extra water regardless.
Monte Mucchio sits between the towns of Cortino and Amatrice. Drivers typically approach from the A24 motorway, exiting at Teramo and following the SS80 toward Cortino before taking narrow mountain roads to Ceppo. Public transport is limited; most visitors rent a car or join a guided hike from L’Aquila. Parking at the trailhead is informal but usually available outside peak summer weekends.
Combine the hike with a visit to Lago di Campotosto, a large reservoir ringed by meadows and easy walking paths. The historic center of Amatrice, famous for its namesake pasta sauce, lies a short drive south and offers a convenient base with restaurants and small hotels. Further afield, the dramatic gorge of the Gole del Salinello provides another half-day outing within the same national park.
