Toppe Vurgo: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding day hike to sweeping limestone views in Italy’s lesser-visited central highlands.
Tackle the rewarding trails of Monte Girella for sweeping Apennine views inside Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
Monte Girella rises to 1,941 meters in the Monti della Laga range of Abruzzo, offering hikers a quieter alternative to the more famous Gran Sasso peaks. Its broad summit ridge delivers unobstructed panoramas across forested valleys toward the Adriatic Sea on clear days.
The mountain sits within the protected Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, where ancient beech woods give way to high pastures and rocky outcrops. Summer wildflowers carpet the slopes, while autumn brings golden foliage that draws photographers. The area supports diverse wildlife including Apennine wolves and golden eagles, though sightings require patience and quiet.
The standard route begins near the village of Macchia da Sole and follows a well-marked path through mixed forest before emerging onto open ridges. Expect a steady climb of roughly 800 vertical meters with occasional sections of loose scree near the top. Strong walkers can extend the outing by linking to neighboring summits such as Monte Gorzano. In winter the upper slopes offer ski touring when snow conditions allow, though avalanche awareness is essential.
Access is easiest from the western side via the SS80 road between Teramo and Ascoli Piceno. Park at trailheads near Macchia da Sole or the higher hamlet of Colle di Monte Gorzano when the road is open. Public transport reaches nearby towns, but a car or taxi is required for the final approach to the trailhead.
Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable weather and snow-free trails. July and August can be hot at lower elevations, so start early. Late September and October bring cooler temperatures and fewer visitors. Winter visits demand mountaineering experience and proper gear.
After descending, explore the medieval hill town of Amatrice, known for its distinctive pasta sauce, or continue north to the dramatic gorge of Gole del Salinello. The ancient abbey of San Pietro in Valle lies a short drive away and offers a striking contrast between architecture and wild landscape.

A rewarding day hike to sweeping limestone views in Italy’s lesser-visited central highlands.
The main trail is rated moderate to strenuous due to the sustained climb and final scree slope, suitable for fit walkers with good footwear.
Novice hikers should consider a guided ascent or shorter valley walks in the same park, as the full summit route involves significant elevation gain and navigation.
No huts or services exist above the trailhead; carry all food, water, and emergency supplies.
Experienced hikers sometimes link it with Monte Gorzano via connecting ridges, but this requires an early start and excellent fitness.
Keep an eye out for deer in the beech woods and raptors circling the open ridges; wolves are present but rarely seen during daylight.
