Cima Campuna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
A peaceful, less-visited peak in Italy’s central Apennines offering sweeping views and uncrowded trails.
Monte Fanni Bianchi rises within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park in Abruzzo, offering hikers a quieter alternative to the more famous Corno Grande. Its broad, pale slopes provide expansive views across the Campo Imperatore plateau and the surrounding limestone ridges without the summer crowds that gather on the park’s higher summits.
The mountain is reached most easily by car from L’Aquila, roughly 30 minutes northeast via the SS17bis toward Fonte Cerreto. From Rome, allow two hours via the A24 motorway, exiting at Assergi and continuing uphill. Limited regional buses serve nearby hamlets; hikers often rely on taxis or organized transfers from L’Aquila for trailhead access.
Late spring through early autumn delivers the most reliable conditions for walking. Snow can linger on north-facing slopes into May, while July and August bring warm, dry days ideal for ridge traverses. Autumn offers clear air and fewer visitors, though early frosts may appear by October.
A popular route starts near the Fonte Cerreto parking area and follows a well-marked path through beech woods before emerging onto open grassland. The ascent gains roughly 800 meters and takes four to five hours round-trip for fit walkers. Along the way, look for chamois on the higher scree and golden eagles circling the ridges. Shorter loops around the lower meadows suit those seeking easier outings with panoramic photo opportunities.
The area supports classic Apennine flora, including rare orchids in spring and dense stands of mountain pine. Clear days reveal the distinctive profile of the Gran Sasso chain to the north and the Maiella massif to the southeast. Winter transforms the slopes into a quiet snowscape suitable only for experienced mountaineers with proper equipment.

The main trail is rated moderate to strenuous, with steady elevation gain over rocky and grassy terrain; it suits experienced day hikers but is not technical.
Public transport options are limited; most visitors drive or arrange a taxi from Lu2019Aquila or Assergi to the trailhead.
The lower meadows offer gentle walks, but the full summit route is too demanding for young children; families usually prefer the easier paths around Fonte Cerreto.
No huts or services exist above the roadheads; bring all food, water, and navigation tools.
Chamois, marmots, and golden eagles are regularly spotted; bring binoculars and maintain a respectful distance.
