Cima Campuna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
A rewarding day hike to sweeping views in Italy’s least-crowded mountain range.
Monte Civitella rises above the rolling plateaus west of L’Aquila, offering hikers a compact yet dramatic summit experience without the crowds of the Gran Sasso massif. Its limestone ridges deliver 360-degree panoramas of the Aterno valley, the Velino massif, and distant Maiella peaks on clear days. The mountain’s isolation makes it ideal for those seeking solitude and authentic Abruzzo wilderness.
Drive the SS17 from L’Aquila toward Montereale, then follow signs for Civitella or the hamlet of San Giovanni. A narrow asphalt road climbs to a small parking area near the Colle della Croce pass. From there a signed path leads directly onto the ridge. Public transport is limited; most visitors rent a car or arrange a taxi from L’Aquila station.
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) provide stable weather and wildflower displays or autumn color. Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms; winter visits require crampons and ice-axe experience due to steep snow slopes. Always check the regional weather service before setting out.
The standard ascent follows a well-marked trail that gains roughly 500 m over 3 km. The path traverses open meadows before steepening on rocky switchbacks to the summit cross. Allow three to four hours round-trip for the moderate hike. Those seeking more challenge can continue along the ridge toward Monte San Pietro for an extended loop.
Expect stands of beech forest at lower elevations giving way to alpine meadows rich in orchids and gentians. Golden eagles and Apennine wolves inhabit the area; carry binoculars and maintain distance. Sunrise and late-afternoon light from the summit provide the best photographic opportunities, especially when the valley fog lifts.

A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
The route is moderate for fit hikers; steep sections near the top require sure footing but no technical climbing.
Dogs are permitted if kept on leash; owners must carry waste bags as there are no bins.
Only the lower beech woods provide shade; the ridge and summit are fully exposed, so sun protection is essential.
Wild camping is tolerated in small numbers but discouraged due to lack of water and fragile alpine vegetation; use established sites lower down.
Descend immediately via the same trail if thunder or fog appears; the exposed ridge offers no safe shelter.
