Monte Cardoneto: Hiking Calabria’s Quiet Sila Peak

Climb Monte Cardoneto for sweeping views across the Sila highlands and ancient beech forests of southern Italy.

Why Monte Cardoneto Stands Out

Monte Cardoneto rises in the Sila Greca section of Calabria’s central plateau, offering hikers a quieter alternative to the busier trails around Camigliatello and Lorica. Its rounded summit and surrounding mixed beech and pine woodland create a compact but rewarding mountain experience with long sightlines over rolling plateaus and distant Ionian ridges.

Getting There

Most visitors approach from the A3 motorway exits at Rogliano or Cosenza Nord, then follow provincial roads toward the villages of Acri or San Giovanni in Fiore. The final stretch is a narrow paved road that ends at a small parking area near the Colle d’Ascione saddle. From there a clear footpath climbs steadily through beech woods to the summit cross. Public transport is limited; a rental car or taxi from Acri is the most practical option.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) deliver comfortable temperatures and clear skies. Summer afternoons can turn hot and hazy, while winter often brings snow that closes the upper access road and requires crampons or skis. Wildflowers peak in late May; mushroom hunters favor October.

Trails and Activities

The main out-and-back route from Colle d’Ascione covers roughly 6 km with 350 m of elevation gain and takes two to three hours. Along the way you pass old charcoal hearths and dense stands of tall beech. At the top, a 360-degree panorama includes Monte Botte Donato to the west and the Pollino massif on clear days. Shorter loops link to the nearby Fiumara di Cropani valley for streamside walks. Birdwatchers often spot sparrowhawks and the occasional golden eagle above the treeline.

Nearby Attractions

  • Lago Ampollino, a short drive south, for lakeside picnics and flat cycling paths.
  • The historic center of Acri, with its Norman castle ruins and weekly market.
  • The Sila National Park visitor center in Longobucco for exhibits on local geology and traditional charcoal production.

Combine a morning on Monte Cardoneto with an afternoon visit to one of these sites for a full day in the highlands.

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least two liters of water per person; natural springs along the trail are seasonal and unreliable in summer.
  • Wear sturdy boots with good gripu2014the upper path crosses loose scree and can be slippery after rain.
  • Check the weather forecast the evening before; afternoon thunderstorms are common on the plateau even in good seasons.
