Mont Tossessa: Hiking Cameroon’s Quiet West Region Peak

Mont Meleta offers hikers sweeping highland views and a glimpse into rural Bamileke life in western Cameroon.
Mont Meleta rises above the rolling plateaus of Cameroon’s West Region, providing a quieter alternative to better-known summits farther north. The mountain’s slopes are covered in a mix of grassland, scattered forest patches, and smallholder farms that illustrate the area’s agricultural character. Hikers who reach the summit are rewarded with clear sightlines across valleys dotted with traditional compounds and distant volcanic features.
Several footpaths begin from villages at the base and ascend through cultivated fields before entering steeper, grass-covered terrain. The routes are generally moderate in difficulty yet become more demanding near the top where loose soil and occasional rock outcrops appear. Birdwatchers may spot species typical of Cameroon’s highlands, while the changing vegetation offers photographers varied foregrounds against the wide sky.
The mountain lies within easy reach of the main road linking Bafoussam and Dschang. Travelers usually arrange transport from Bafoussam or a smaller town such as Mbouda, then continue by motorcycle taxi or local vehicle to trailheads. Because signage is minimal, arranging a meeting with a village resident familiar with the paths is the most reliable way to locate the correct starting point.
The drier months from November through February offer the most stable conditions for hiking, with lower rainfall and clearer views. The period just after the main rainy season can still provide good trail conditions while the surrounding vegetation remains lush. Visitors should always carry light rain protection, as sudden showers can occur even in the dry season.
After a climb, many travelers continue to the cultural sites around Bandjoun or the scenic viewpoints near the Noun River. Markets in nearby towns provide insight into local crafts and produce, complementing the natural focus of a Mont Meleta visit. The combination of mountain hiking and rural immersion makes the area appealing for travelers seeking an authentic, low-key experience in Cameroon’s highlands.

The terrain is best suited to adults and older teens with prior walking experience; younger children may find the steeper sections tiring.
