Why Visit Mirador de Cubos de la Memoria
Perched on a rocky headland in eastern Asturias, the Mirador de Cubos de la Memoria offers a rare blend of contemporary art and dramatic seascape. The site features dozens of large wooden cubes painted by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola with bold symbols, faces, and maritime motifs that reference local fishing traditions and the memory of those lost at sea. These installations stand against a backdrop of sheer cliffs, crashing waves, and distant horizons that stretch toward the Bay of Biscay.

The Painted Cubes
Walk among the cubes arranged along the cliff edge. Each face carries different imagery—anchors, waves, human profiles, and geometric patterns—that shift in color and meaning depending on the angle of light. The cubes are anchored into the rock, designed to withstand Atlantic storms while creating a striking foreground for photographs.
Coastal Panoramas
From the viewpoint you look east toward the jagged coastline of Llanes and west along the rugged shore toward Ribadesella. On clear days the Picos de Europa mountains appear on the horizon. The site is also excellent for watching seabirds and, in season, passing fishing boats.
How to Get There
The mirador lies just outside the village of Llanes. Drivers follow the N-634 coastal road and take a short signed turnoff that leads to a small parking area. From the car park a well-marked path of a few hundred meters reaches the cubes. Public buses stop in Llanes; from there it is a pleasant 25-minute walk along the coastal promenade and footpath.
Best Time to Visit
Spring through early autumn brings the mildest weather and longest daylight for photography. Mornings often offer calmer seas and softer light on the painted surfaces. Winter visits are possible but can be windy and wet; the cubes remain accessible yet the experience is more dramatic than comfortable.
