Why Visit Matshwane Hill

Matshwane Hill rises gently from the flat bushveld of Botswana’s Central District, offering hikers a rewarding climb with sweeping views across acacia-dotted plains. Its modest elevation provides an accessible introduction to the region’s geology without the crowds found at more famous landmarks.

Getting There

The hill lies near the main north-south road corridor between Gaborone and Francistown. Travelers typically turn off at Palapye and follow district roads toward the coordinates south of the Tswapong area. A standard sedan can reach the base on graded gravel, though a high-clearance vehicle is preferable after heavy rains. Public transport reaches nearby villages, after which a short taxi or arranged lift completes the journey.

Best Time to Visit

The coolest and driest months from May to October deliver comfortable daytime temperatures and clear skies ideal for photography and longer hikes. November through April brings hotter days and occasional thunderstorms that can make rocky sections slippery. Early mornings are best year-round to avoid midday heat and to watch wildlife at the hill’s base.

Trails and Activities

A clear path winds from the lower slopes to the summit, taking roughly ninety minutes for most visitors. Along the way, look for quartz outcrops and seasonal wildflowers. At the top, the 360-degree vista includes distant villages and the edge of the Tswapong Hills. Birders often spot hornbills and raptors; carry binoculars. Sunset from the summit is especially memorable.

Nearby Attractions

Combine a visit with the nearby Tswapong Hills for more challenging walks or the historic village of Serowe to learn about Bangwato culture. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary lies within a reasonable drive and offers wildlife viewing that complements the hill’s peaceful landscape.

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least two liters of water per person, as no facilities exist on the hill itself.
  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes and a hat; the granite surface can become hot and uneven.
  • Check local weather and road conditions before departure, especially during the rainy season.

Frequently asked questions
