Makabana Mountain: Botswana’s Quiet Kalahari Peak

Hike the slopes of Makabana for sweeping savanna views and a rare sense of solitude in central Botswana.

BotswanaUpdated 12 October 2026

Why Makabana Stands Out

Makabana rises from the flat Kalahari sands as a modest but distinctive granite inselberg, offering hikers clear sightlines across acacia woodland and seasonal pans. Unlike the crowded viewpoints around the Okavango Delta, this peak delivers uninterrupted horizons with almost no infrastructure, making it ideal for travelers seeking Botswana’s quieter landscapes.

Getting There

The mountain lies roughly 80 km southwest of Maun. Most visitors drive a 4×4 vehicle along the sandy tracks that branch off the main Maun–Ghanzi road; allow three to four hours from Maun depending on conditions. Those without their own vehicle can arrange transfers with lodges in Maun that specialize in off-road excursions. No public transport reaches the base.

Best Time to Visit

The coolest and driest months, May through September, provide the most comfortable hiking temperatures and firm tracks. October brings heat and dust, while the December-to-March rains can make access roads impassable and increase the risk of flash floods in the rocky gullies.

What to See and Do

A straightforward ascent follows a faint path on the eastern flank, taking two to three hours round-trip for fit walkers. At the summit, low granite domes frame 360-degree views of the surrounding mopane and acacia savanna. Birdwatchers may spot raptors riding thermals, while small antelope such as steenbok occasionally appear near the base at dawn or dusk. Because the area remains undeveloped, visitors should plan a full day and carry all supplies.

Nearby Attractions

  • The Moremi Game Reserve lies to the north and pairs well with a Makabana visit for wildlife viewing.
  • Seasonal pans to the west attract elephants and giraffes after good rains.
  • Traditional San communities south of the mountain occasionally welcome respectful cultural visits arranged through local operators.

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least three liters of water per person; no reliable sources exist on the mountain.
  • Travel with a local guide or GPS track, as the approach roads have few signposts and can shift with wind.
  • Pack binoculars and a field guide; the peaku2019s elevation improves chances of spotting raptors and distant game.

Frequently asked questions

Is Makabana suitable for beginners?+

The hike is moderate but involves scrambling over rock; first-time hikers should start early and turn back if the route feels exposed.

Do I need a permit to climb Makabana?+

No formal permit is required, but travelers must still respect community land-use agreements and obtain permission if camping near nearby villages.

Are there facilities at the mountain?+

There are none; plan to be fully self-sufficient with water, food, and a first-aid kit.

Can I combine a visit with a safari?+

Yes; many travelers spend one night in Maun, hike Makabana the next morning, then continue to Moremi or Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

What wildlife might I encounter?+

Expect birds of prey, small antelope, and possibly baboons; larger mammals are less common than in the delta but can appear near water sources after rain.
