The Waterbuffalo Statue: Cambodia’s Quiet Tribute to Rural Heritage

An off-the-beaten-path ancient site offering quiet exploration amid jungle-covered sandstone carvings.
LBB5 stands as one of Cambodia’s lesser-known Khmer temple complexes, set amid scrub forest in the northwest. Its compact layout of laterite and sandstone structures provides visitors with an intimate encounter with 12th- and 13th-century architecture without the crowds of larger Angkor sites.
Built during the late Angkorian period, LBB5 features a central sanctuary surrounded by a laterite enclosure wall. Intricate lintels depict Hindu deities and floral motifs typical of the Bayon style. The site’s modest scale suggests it served a local community rather than functioning as a major royal temple.
Access begins from Siem Reap or the town of Srayorng. Travelers typically arrange a private driver or join a guided tour that includes transport over unpaved roads. The final stretch requires a short walk through shaded forest paths; sturdy shoes are essential.
The cool, dry season from November to February offers the most comfortable temperatures and clearest paths. Early morning visits minimize heat and allow observation of local birdlife before the sun rises high. Avoid the height of the rainy season when tracks become difficult.
Combine a visit with the larger temple of Banteay Chhmar to the west or the remote Prasat Ta Muen to the north. These sites share the same Khmer architectural lineage and provide context for LBB5’s place within the regional network of sanctuaries.
