History of Koromo Castle

Koromo Castle, also known as Shichishu Castle, was constructed in 1620 by Matsudaira Iehiro on a low hill in what is now Toyota City. The fortress served as the administrative center for the Koromo domain until its dismantling in the early Meiji period. Today only earthworks, stone walls, and a reconstructed gate remain, offering visitors a quiet window into Edo-era defensive architecture.

What to See and Do

Begin at the main entrance where a wooden yagura gate marks the original approach. Stroll along the surviving moat, now lined with cherry trees that bloom in April, and climb the gentle slope to the inner bailey for elevated views across the surrounding city. Informative signs in Japanese and English detail the castle’s layout and the Matsudaira clan’s role. The adjacent Koromo Castle Park includes a small local-history museum displaying excavated artifacts and period maps.

Spring brings hanami crowds under the blossoms, while autumn transforms the slopes with fiery maple foliage. In winter the bare trees reveal the castle’s strategic earthworks more clearly.

How to Get There

Take the Meitetsu Toyota Line to Josui Station, then walk ten minutes east through residential streets to the park entrance. From central Nagoya the journey takes about 45 minutes by train and costs under 1,000 yen one way. Limited free parking is available near the park for those driving from the Tomei Expressway.
