Koh Tonsay: Rabbit Island’s Quiet Beaches Near Kep, Cambodia
A small, largely undeveloped island offering clear waters, simple beach bungalows, and easy escapes from the mainland crowds.
Why Koh Tonsay Stands Out
Koh Tonsay, locally called Rabbit Island, sits just off Kep Province and remains one of Cambodia’s least developed coastal spots. Its two main beaches curve around a low, forested interior, with shallow water that stays calm for most of the year. Unlike busier mainland beaches, the island has no paved roads or large resorts, so visitors find only scattered wooden bungalows, basic seafood restaurants, and walking trails that lead to quieter coves.
Getting There from Kep
Long-tail boats depart from the small pier near Kep’s crab market. The crossing takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on sea conditions. Fishermen usually wait for enough passengers to share the cost, and the same boats return in the afternoon. Travelers who want flexibility can arrange a private boat for the day. Once on the island there are no vehicles; everything is reached on foot or by swimming.
Things to Do on the Island
Most visitors spend their time swimming or snorkeling along the main beach, where small coral patches and colorful fish appear close to shore. A short inland trail climbs to a modest viewpoint and then drops to a second, more sheltered beach on the far side. Early morning walks often reveal hermit crabs and occasional monkeys in the trees. At low tide, the exposed sand flats become good for shell spotting. Evening entertainment is limited to watching the sunset and eating freshly grilled squid or crab at one of the beachside shacks.
Best Time to Visit
The dry months from November through April bring the calmest seas and clearest water, making boat trips reliable and snorkeling pleasant. From May to October, afternoon winds and occasional rain can make crossings choppy, though the island is quieter and room rates drop. Monsoon season also brings more mosquitoes, so repellent is useful.
Nearby Attractions on the Mainland
After returning to Kep, many travelers continue to the Kep National Park trails for jungle walks and sunset views from the lighthouse. The local crab market supplies fresh seafood that can be cooked on the spot, and the nearby pepper plantations offer short tours of Cambodia’s famous Kampot pepper farms. A day trip to nearby Koh Tonsay pairs easily with these stops without requiring an overnight on the mainland.
Visitor tips
- Bring enough cash in small denominations; the island has no ATMs or card facilities.
