Old Guardhouse: Cambodia’s Historic Border Landmark Near Preah Vihear
Step back in time at the Old Guardhouse, a weathered sentinel overlooking the Cambodian-Thai frontier and the majestic…
Khunnimol Park offers locals and visitors a peaceful urban oasis amid Cambodia's bustling capital.
Khunnimol Park sits in a residential area of western Phnom Penh, providing a genuine slice of everyday Cambodian life away from the main tourist corridors. Mature trees shade wide pathways, and open lawns invite picnics or quiet reading. The park attracts morning joggers, families with children, and elders playing board games under the shade.
Stroll the central loop path that circles the main lawn; it takes about fifteen minutes at an easy pace. Look for the small lotus pond near the eastern edge where dragonflies gather in the late afternoon. Children’s play equipment occupies one corner, while a modest exercise area with pull-up bars and benches serves fitness enthusiasts. On weekends, food vendors set up at the northern entrance selling fresh sugarcane juice and grilled bananas.
Photography is straightforward: golden-hour light filters through the tall rain trees, creating soft shadows on the grass. Birdwatchers may spot common mynas, tailorbirds, and the occasional hoopoe during cooler months.
The park lies near the intersection of streets in the Tuol Sangke neighborhood. Most visitors arrive by tuk-tuk or ride-hailing app from central Phnom Penh in fifteen to twenty-five minutes depending on traffic. Motorbike taxis are also common and inexpensive. Limited street parking exists along the western boundary for those driving.
Early morning (6–8 a.m.) or late afternoon (4:30–6:30 p.m.) offers cooler temperatures and active local scenes. The park remains open daily, though shade and breezes make it comfortable year-round. The November-to-February dry season brings clearer skies and fewer mosquitoes. Avoid midday during the hot season (March–May) when temperatures exceed 35 °C.
Combine a visit with a stop at the nearby Wat Tuol Sangke temple or continue west to the Russian Market for textiles and souvenirs. The park serves as a calm counterpoint to the more crowded riverside promenades downtown.
