Old Guardhouse: Cambodia’s Historic Border Landmark Near Preah Vihear
Step back in time at the Old Guardhouse, a weathered sentinel overlooking the Cambodian-Thai frontier and the majestic…
Visit the preserved office of former Khmer Rouge leader Khieu Samphan near Anlong Veng for a somber look at Cambodia's history.
The Khieu Samphan Office stands as a preserved relic from the final years of the Khmer Rouge regime. Located in the remote forests of Oddar Meanchey Province, this modest structure served as the workplace of Khieu Samphan, the regime’s nominal head of state. Today it forms part of the Anlong Veng historical circuit that documents the movement’s decline after 1979.
Visitors explore the simple wooden building containing period desks, typewriters, and faded documents. Informative panels outline Khieu Samphan’s role and the broader context of the regime’s collapse. A short walking trail leads to nearby bunkers and the site of Pol Pot’s cremation, allowing travelers to connect multiple Khmer Rouge locations in one visit. Guides from the local community provide personal accounts that add depth beyond written text.
The site is treated as a memorial. Photography is permitted outside but discouraged inside the office itself. Silence is requested in the main room to honor the gravity of the history.
The office lies roughly 15 kilometers north of Anlong Veng town along Route 68. Most visitors arrive by private car or motorbike; taxis from Siem Reap take about three hours. The final stretch is a graded dirt road that can become muddy in heavy rain, so four-wheel-drive vehicles are advisable during the wet season.
November through February offers the coolest temperatures and driest roads. Early morning arrivals avoid both heat and tour groups. The site remains accessible year-round, though afternoon thunderstorms from May to October can make access difficult.
Combine the visit with the Ta Mok House, the nearby Dangrek Mountains escarpment, and the border market at Choam Srawngam. These sites together illustrate the Khmer Rouge’s final stronghold and its geographic isolation.
