Old Guardhouse: Cambodia’s Historic Border Landmark Near Preah Vihear
Step back in time at the Old Guardhouse, a weathered sentinel overlooking the Cambodian-Thai frontier and the majestic…
A quiet communications outpost on a forested rise offering wide vistas across the Dangrek Mountains and rural plains.
Perched on a low ridge in Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province, the Kbal Tonsaong Communications Center serves as both a working radio and television relay station and an informal viewpoint for travelers. The site sits at roughly 400 meters elevation, giving clear sightlines over rolling forest and rice fields that stretch toward the Thai border.
Visitors climb a short dirt track to a fenced compound where several tall masts stand among simple concrete buildings. The real draw is the open platform beside the main tower, where the land drops away sharply. On clear mornings the view reaches the distinctive silhouette of Prasat Preah Vihear temple to the northeast and the darker line of the Dangrek escarpment. Local staff are usually present but do not offer formal tours; polite requests for photos are almost always granted.
Bring binoculars for distant wildlife sightings—hornbills and raptors are common. The surrounding secondary forest holds interesting trees and butterflies, making the short walk around the perimeter rewarding for patient observers.
The site lies roughly 25 kilometers west of Preah Vihear town along a mix of sealed and laterite roads. Most travelers hire a motorbike or car with driver in Preah Vihear or Tbeng Meanchey; four-wheel-drive vehicles are advisable after heavy rain. From the main road, a signed track of about 1.5 kilometers leads uphill. No public transport reaches the gate.
The dry season from November to March offers the clearest skies and firmest roads. Early morning visits avoid afternoon haze and heat; sunset is also popular but requires leaving before dark because the track has no lighting. Avoid the peak of the rainy season when the laterite becomes slippery and leeches appear in the grass.
