Why Kanonenplatz Stands Out
Kanonenplatz sits on a modest rise in northern Berlin’s Reinickendorf district, offering one of the city’s quieter panoramic outlooks. The name comes from the pair of historic cannons that still stand on the open terrace, remnants of earlier fortifications that once guarded the surrounding heathland. From the platform visitors see a wide sweep that includes the distant towers of central Berlin, the tree canopy of Tegeler Forst, and on clear days the low hills of Brandenburg to the north.
The Views and Atmosphere
The 360-degree panorama is especially rewarding at sunrise when the light catches the glass facades of modern high-rises and the dark green of the surrounding forest. Because the site lies slightly outside the busiest tourist circuits, it rarely feels crowded. Benches and low walls make it comfortable to linger with a coffee or sketchbook. In winter the bare trees open even longer sightlines; in summer wildflowers and grasses soften the edges of the grass slope below the cannons.
Practical Layout
A short gravel path leads from the nearby parking area to the terrace. The cannons themselves are mounted on low stone platforms; visitors may sit on the surrounding walls but are asked not to climb the gun carriages. Information panels in German and English briefly explain the military history of the site without overwhelming the natural setting.
How to Reach Kanonenplatz
Public transport is straightforward. Take the U6 line to Kurt-Schumacher-Platz, then bus 222 or 322 toward the Tegeler See direction and alight at the stop “Kanonenplatz.” Cyclists can follow the well-marked paths through Jungfernheide park; the final ascent is gentle. Drivers will find limited free parking along the approach road, but spaces fill quickly on sunny weekends.
Best Time to Visit and Nearby Options
Late spring through early autumn provides the most comfortable temperatures and longest daylight. Evenings are popular for sunset photography. Combine the visit with a walk in nearby Volkspark Rehberge or a detour to the historic Tegel Airport terminal building, now repurposed as an exhibition space. The flat terrain around the viewpoint also suits families with strollers or those seeking an easy, short hike before returning to central Berlin.
