Phnom Chheh Veaek: Cambodia’s Quiet Mountain Summit for Hikers
Climb this northern Cambodian peak for sweeping views, cool breezes, and a peaceful escape from temple crowds.
Hike through lush forest to panoramic views on this lesser-known Cambodian peak near the coast.
Jrolunh Mountain rises in Cambodia’s southwest, offering hikers a rewarding climb through evergreen forest and open ridges without the crowds found at more famous sites. Its slopes support diverse birdlife and small mammals, while the summit delivers sweeping views across the Gulf of Thailand and distant Cardamom ridges on clear days.
The main trail begins at a modest trailhead and climbs steadily through mixed forest. Expect a moderate-to-strenuous half-day round trip with some steep sections and rocky footing. Shorter viewpoints along the way provide resting spots and photo opportunities. Carry plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes.
Early morning starts increase chances of hearing gibbons or spotting hornbills. The forest canopy offers shade, while higher ridges open to grasslands with wildflowers in the wet season. Sunset from the top rewards those who camp or time their descent carefully.
Most visitors reach the mountain from Kampot or Kep by motorbike or hired driver along rural roads. The final approach is on an unpaved track best suited to sturdy vehicles or walking the last stretch. Public transport drops travelers at nearby villages, from which a local moto taxi can complete the journey.
The dry months from November to April bring the most reliable weather and clearer summit views. The wet season offers lush greenery and fewer visitors but turns trails muddy and increases leech risk. Avoid the peak of the southwest monsoon when heavy rains can make access difficult.
Combine a mountain hike with a visit to coastal pepper plantations around Kampot or the quiet beaches of Kep. The area’s French colonial architecture and fresh seafood provide pleasant contrast to the highland experience. Day trips to Bokor National Park are also feasible for those wanting more extensive exploration.
