Mont Sala: Hiking Cameroon’s Remote Northern Peaks
Experience the rugged landscapes, local Fulani culture, and panoramic views at Mont Sala in northern Cameroon.
Explore the trails, vistas, and local culture surrounding Hosséré Pitoa, a distinctive peak in Cameroon's North region.
Hosséré Pitoa rises from the savanna plains of northern Cameroon, offering hikers a rewarding climb with expansive views across the region toward the Mandara Mountains and distant river valleys. Its slopes support a mix of dry woodland and grassland that changes with the seasons, providing habitat for birds and small mammals while showcasing the area’s dramatic geology.
The main ascent follows a clear but steep path that begins near scattered villages at the base. Hikers typically reach the summit ridge in three to four hours, passing through stands of acacia and open clearings with occasional rock outcrops. At the top, the 360-degree panorama reveals the flat expanse of the North region stretching toward the border with Nigeria. Many visitors combine the hike with a stop at a nearby Fulani settlement to observe traditional cattle herding and learn about seasonal transhumance patterns.
The cooler, drier months from November through February provide the most comfortable conditions for climbing, with clear skies and lower risk of flash floods on the lower slopes. The rainy season from June to September brings lush vegetation but makes trails slippery and increases the chance of afternoon storms.
Most travelers reach Hosséré Pitoa by road from Garoua, the regional capital roughly two hours away by four-wheel-drive vehicle over unpaved tracks. Public transport options include shared taxis or minibuses that run to nearby villages, after which a short moto-taxi ride brings visitors to the trailhead. Those arriving from Yaoundé can fly into Garoua and arrange onward ground transport through local operators.
Within a half-day’s drive lie the floodplains of the Benue River, known for seasonal bird migrations, and the edges of Bouba Njida National Park, where guided wildlife drives are possible. Smaller peaks in the same range offer additional day hikes for those extending their stay.
