Discover the quiet trails and sweeping savanna views of this lesser-known peak in North Region, Cameroon.
Hoséré Vokré rises from the savanna plains of northern Cameroon as a distinctive granite dome offering hikers unobstructed panoramas of rolling grasslands and distant ridges. Its modest elevation and isolation make it a rewarding day or overnight trek without the crowds found on more famous Cameroonian peaks.
The mountain lies roughly 80 km northeast of Garoua. Travelers typically arrange a 4×4 vehicle or shared taxi from Garoua to the village of Vokré at the base. From there, local paths lead upward; hiring a guide from the village ensures safe navigation across unmarked sections and supports the community.
The dry season from November through March provides the clearest trails and safest rock surfaces. The wet season brings lush vegetation but slippery slopes and limited road access, so most visitors plan around the cooler, drier months.
After descending, combine the trip with a visit to the Bouba Njida National Park, known for its elephant herds, or explore the historic river port and markets of Garoua. The region also offers opportunities to learn about Fulani pastoral traditions in nearby villages.
Carry ample water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear. Mobile coverage is patchy above the tree line, so inform someone of your route. Respect local customs when passing through farmland on the lower slopes.
