Mont Sala: Hiking Cameroon’s Remote Northern Peaks
Experience the rugged landscapes, local Fulani culture, and panoramic views at Mont Sala in northern Cameroon.
A guide to trekking Cameroon’s lesser-known Hoséré Kobaro mountain and its sweeping savanna views.
Hoséré Kobaro rises from the rolling savanna of Cameroon’s North Region, offering hikers an uncrowded alternative to more famous peaks farther south. Its slopes feature granite outcrops, dry woodland, and seasonal streams that support a surprising variety of birds and small mammals. From the summit ridge, visitors gain uninterrupted panoramas across the plain toward the border with Nigeria, especially striking at sunrise or late afternoon when light rakes across the grass.
Most travelers fly into Garoua, the regional hub, then continue by road northwest toward the small town of Figuil. From there, local motorcycle taxis or hired 4×4 vehicles can reach trailheads at the base of the massif. The final approach crosses unpaved tracks that become difficult after heavy rain, so allow extra time. Those coming from Yaoundé face a long but scenic overland journey of two full days.
The dry season, roughly November through March, brings the clearest skies and firm trails. April to October sees frequent downpours that turn paths slippery and can wash out access roads. Early in the dry season the grass remains green; later months offer better visibility but hotter daytime temperatures.
The broader North Region contains several complementary sites. Bouba Njida National Park lies to the southeast and protects large mammals including elephants and lions. To the north, the Mandara Mountains provide a longer trekking option for those wanting multi-day adventures. Garoua itself offers markets, riverboat rides on the Benue, and basic lodging before or after a mountain trip.
Carry ample water, as natural sources are seasonal. Sturdy boots, sun protection, and a headlamp for early starts are essential. Local guides from surrounding villages can improve both safety and cultural insight; hiring them also supports the community.
