Home Krouch Chmar Castle: Cambodia’s Quiet Riverside Fortress

A serene, little-visited 19th-century brick citadel on the Mekong’s eastern bank that rewards travelers seeking authentic history without crowds.

Why Visit Home Krouch Chmar

Perched on a low bluff above the Mekong, Home Krouch Chmar is a compact brick fortress built in the late 1800s as a regional administrative outpost. Unlike the sandstone temples of Angkor, its thick walls and river-facing bastions reflect a blend of Khmer and colonial military architecture. The site’s isolation has preserved its quiet atmosphere; visitors often have the ramparts and overgrown courtyards to themselves.

Getting There

The castle lies roughly 140 km northeast of Phnom Penh. Most travelers take National Road 7 to Kampong Cham, then cross the Mekong by ferry at Prey Chhor and continue 25 km north on a laterite road. Motorbike or private car is the most flexible option; shared taxis run from Kampong Cham market in the morning. From Siem Reap, allow a full day via Highway 6 and the new Mekong bridge at Kampong Thom.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to March offers firm roads and clear views across the river. April brings intense heat; May to October sees lush vegetation but occasional flooding that can close the final access track. Early morning or late afternoon light is ideal for photography and avoids midday glare on the brickwork.

What to See and Do

Begin at the western gate, where original teak doors still hang on iron hinges. Walk the 4-meter-high perimeter wall for views of fishing boats and distant sugar-palm groves. Inside, explore the central residence with its wide verandas and surviving French-tiled roof. A small museum room displays period rifles, ledger books, and river-trade artifacts. Behind the main building, a shaded path leads to the old powder magazine and a flight of steps descending to a seasonal bathing ghat. Allow two to three hours; bring binoculars for birdlife along the riverbank.

Nearby Attractions

Combine the visit with the silk-weaving village of Prey Chung Kran, 12 km south, or the riverside market at Kampong Cham for fresh river prawns. The ancient temple of Wat Nokor Bachey lies an hour farther west if you are heading toward Phnom Penh.

Visitor tips

  • Carry plenty of water and wear a hat; there is no shade or vendor inside the walls.
  • Hire a local guide from the nearby village for $10u201315 to unlock the powder magazine and share oral histories.
  • Respect the site by staying off unstable sections of wall and leaving no litter; the caretaker lives on-site and appreciates small donations for maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
