Rokusyo Yama: Hiking Aichi’s Quiet Forested Summit
Discover serene trails, seasonal foliage, and sweeping countryside views on this lesser-known peak in Aichi Prefecture.
A rewarding half-day hike to the second summit of Mount Ohira offering sweeping views across Aichi Prefecture.
Ohirayama Peak 2 rises above the rolling hills of eastern Aichi, rewarding hikers with unobstructed sightlines over the Mikawa Plain, distant ridgelines of the Tenryu mountains, and on clear days the shimmer of Mikawa Bay. Unlike busier peaks near Nagoya, this summit remains relatively quiet, giving visitors a genuine sense of escape into nature while staying within an hour’s drive of Toyota and Okazaki.
Most visitors arrive by car via the Tomei Expressway, exiting at Toyota or Okazaki and following prefectural roads toward the Ohirayama trailhead parking area. Public transport is possible but involves a train to Meiden Nagata Station followed by a local bus to the lower trailhead and a short walk; allow extra time for connections. The final approach is on a narrow forest road that ends at a small parking lot serving both Peak 1 and Peak 2 trails.
Late March through early May brings fresh greenery and occasional wildflowers, while October and November deliver vibrant autumn foliage that frames the valley views. Summer months are warm and humid with higher insect activity; winter offers crisp air and possible light snow but requires micro-spikes after storms. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.
The standard route to Peak 2 follows a well-marked ridge path that begins with gentle switchbacks through mixed cedar and deciduous forest before steepening near the summit. The round-trip distance is moderate, typically taking three to four hours including breaks. At the top a modest clearing provides space to rest and photograph the layered mountain horizons. The path is mostly dirt and leaf litter with occasional rocky steps; sturdy footwear is essential.
After descending, many hikers continue to nearby Korankei Gorge for its famous autumn maple displays or visit the pottery villages of Seto for a cultural contrast to the mountain scenery. The broader Aichi highland area also features several onsen ryokan that welcome day-use bathing, perfect for easing tired legs.
