Experience dramatic Pacific vistas, a historic lighthouse, and quiet coastal trails at this scenic viewpoint in Mihama.
Perched at the southern tip of Aichi Prefecture, Hazu Misaki Observatory delivers unobstructed views across the Pacific Ocean from a compact headland. The site combines a working lighthouse, low cliffs, and open grassy areas where visitors can watch fishing boats, seasonal seabirds, and distant freighters on clear days. Because the cape juts into open water, the horizon feels vast and the light changes dramatically from sunrise through late afternoon.
From Nagoya Station, take the Meitetsu train to Kowa Station or Utsumi Station, then transfer to a local bus bound for Mihama’s southern coast. The final stop leaves a 15-minute walk along a quiet road to the cape. Drivers should follow Route 247 south from Gamagori; a small parking area sits just below the lighthouse. The last stretch is narrow, so larger vehicles may need to park slightly earlier and walk the remaining distance.
The main attraction is the 360-degree panorama from the fenced observation deck beside the lighthouse. Walk the short loop trail that circles the headland for different angles—east toward the Ise Peninsula and west along the Chita coastline. In spring, low-growing coastal flowers bloom along the paths; in winter, the clear air often reveals Mount Fuji on the horizon. Photographers favor the golden hour when the lighthouse silhouette stands against the setting sun. Bring binoculars for spotting distant islands and passing vessels.
Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light and fewer visitors. Autumn (October–November) typically brings the clearest skies, while June’s rainy season can shroud the cape in mist. Avoid typhoon season (August–September) when strong winds close the observation area. The site remains open year-round, though winter visits require a windproof jacket.
Combine a visit with the sandy beaches of Mihama or the historic streets of Kira. The nearby Morozaki area offers additional coastal walks and fresh seafood restaurants. For a longer day, continue to Cape Irago for another dramatic viewpoint across the bay entrance.
