South Gate Angkor Thom: Cambodia’s Majestic Monumental Gateway
The South Gate offers a striking introduction to the ancient walled city of Angkor Thom through its iconic face towers…
Glide by boat through the submerged trees of the Flooded Forest on Tonle Sap Lake for an unforgettable glimpse of Cambodia’s living wetland ecosystem.
The Flooded Forest lies on the northern shore of Tonle Sap Lake, where seasonal monsoon waters rise to submerge the trunks and lower branches of tall trees. Visitors experience a hushed, green tunnel as boats weave between trunks while kingfishers dart overhead and water snakes slip beneath the surface. The site is reached by a short boat ride from the mainland and remains one of the most peaceful alternatives to crowded Angkor temples.
Unlike open lake tours, the flooded forest offers close-up views of a rare ecosystem. During peak flood, water levels can rise more than eight meters, creating a labyrinth of branches that shelters storks, herons, and macaques. The water is shallow enough in places to reveal submerged roots and fish darting among them. Local boatmen know the narrow channels and can point out hidden bird nests or fruiting trees that attract wildlife.
Most travelers start from Siem Reap. Private or small-group boat tours depart from the Chong Kneas or Kompong Phluk piers. The journey across open water takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes before entering the tree canopy. Independent visitors can hire a long-tail boat with driver at the pier; larger tour operators include the forest as part of a half-day Tonle Sap itinerary.
Water levels peak between August and October, when the forest is fully submerged and navigation is easiest. Early morning departures (around 7 a.m.) deliver cooler temperatures, softer light, and higher chances of spotting birds before tourist boats multiply. Avoid the height of the dry season (March–May), when water recedes and the experience shrinks to a narrow stream.
The area forms part of the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve. Keep voices low and engines at idle speed to avoid disturbing breeding colonies. Many operators now use quieter electric motors on smaller craft. Binoculars and a telephoto lens help observe distant birds without approaching nests.
Allow a full day if combining two sites; most operators offer flexible packages.
