Feuerleitturm: Berlin’s Overlooked WWII Fire-Control Tower

This austere concrete monument near the Spree offers rare insight into Berlin’s wartime defenses and postwar reuse.

BerlinUpdated 11 October 2026

History of the Feuerleitturm

Built in 1940 as part of Berlin’s layered air-defense system, the Feuerleitturm directed searchlights and flak batteries across the northern sky. Its thick walls and elevated platform allowed operators to track Allied bombers and coordinate fire. After 1945 the tower survived demolition campaigns that leveled many similar structures; today it stands as one of the few intact examples of its type.

What to Expect on Site

The exterior is a stark, windowless concrete cylinder rising above overgrown railway land. Interpretive panels along the perimeter path explain the tower’s function and the surrounding industrial landscape. From the base, visitors can see the contrast between the wartime relic and the modern apartment blocks and cycle paths that now surround it. Interior access is limited, but the exterior alone rewards a short visit.

Getting There

Reach the site on foot from Nordbahnhof S-Bahn station in roughly fifteen minutes via the Berlin Wall Trail. Cyclists can follow the marked route along the Panke canal. The nearest tram stop is Gartenplatz, from which a five-minute walk leads directly to the tower’s fenced perimeter.

Best Time to Visit

Spring through autumn offers the clearest views and easiest walking on unpaved paths. Early morning or late afternoon light accentuates the tower’s silhouette against the skyline. Winter visits are possible but require sturdy footwear for icy ground.

Nearby Attractions

  • The Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße provides context on the city’s division.
  • Mauerpark’s Sunday flea market and karaoke sessions lie a short walk east.
  • The former freight yard at Gleisdreieck has been converted into a large public park with playgrounds and lawns.

Visitor tips

  • Bring binoculars; the elevated platform and surrounding rail lines reward distant viewing even if you cannot enter the tower.
  • Combine the visit with a walk along the Berlin Wall Trail for a continuous linear route without backtracking.
  • Respect the fenced perimeter; climbing or graffiti is prohibited and the structure remains under heritage protection.
