Why El Visu Stands Out

El Visu rises above the valleys of central Asturias as a compact, accessible peak that rewards hikers with broad vistas of green hills rolling toward the higher Picos de Europa. Unlike the crowded trails around Covadonga or the Lagos de Covadonga, this summit offers solitude and a true sense of the region’s Atlantic mountain character without requiring technical skills.

Trails and What to Expect

The most popular route begins near the village of Campomanes and follows an old herding path that climbs steadily through meadows dotted with wildflowers in spring and early summer. The path later crosses open limestone slabs before reaching the rounded summit. Hikers enjoy continuous views of the Nalón valley and, on clear days, distant glimpses of the main Picos ridges. The round-trip is suitable for fit walkers who enjoy a full day out; allow six to seven hours including breaks.

Flora and Wildlife

Look for chamois on the higher slopes and griffon vultures circling thermals. In late spring the meadows are bright with gentians and narcissus. Autumn brings golden beech woods lower down and fewer visitors.

Getting There

Reach the trailhead by car from Oviedo in roughly forty minutes via the A-66 motorway, exiting at Pola de Lena and following local roads toward Campomanes. Limited bus service runs to Campomanes from Oviedo; from there a taxi or additional walk is needed to the start of the path. Parking is informal along the roadside near the village.

Best Time to Visit

Late May through early October offers the most reliable weather and snow-free trails. July and August are warmest but can bring afternoon thunderstorms; start early. Winter visits require crampons and ice-axe experience because of ice on the upper slabs.

Combine the hike with a visit to the Romanesque church of Santa Cristina de Lena, a short drive away, or sample local cider in the sidrerías of Pola de Lena. The nearby town of La Pola offers a convenient base with simple guesthouses and hearty Asturian bean stew.
