Why El Porrón Stands Out

El Porrón rises in eastern Asturias between the sea and the first ridges of the Cantabrian Mountains. Its rounded summit delivers clear sightlines to the coastline near Ribadesella and, on good days, the jagged profile of the Picos de Europa. Unlike busier peaks inside the national park, this mountain sees few visitors, making it ideal for a half-day escape.

Getting to the Trailhead

The closest access point lies just south of the N-632 coastal road between Ribadesella and Llanes. Drivers can park in a small lay-by near the village of Cuerres and follow a signed forestry track that climbs gently through oak and chestnut woods. Public transport is limited; the nearest train station is in Ribadesella, from where a local taxi or a 45-minute walk reaches the start of the path.

The Hike to the Summit

The standard route follows an old cattle trail that gains roughly 450 metres over 4 km. After the woods the path opens onto limestone pastures dotted with limestone outcrops. The final 20 minutes cross open grass to the trig point at the top. Most fit walkers complete the round trip in three hours. The terrain is straightforward but can be slippery when wet.

• Coastal views stretching from the cliffs of Cabo de Lastres to the beaches east of Llanes.
• Golden eagles and griffon vultures riding thermals above the ridge.
• Seasonal wildflowers including gentians and asphodel in late spring.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring and early autumn offer the clearest weather and fewer midday clouds. Summer visits are pleasant early in the morning before heat builds. Winter is possible on calm days but snow or ice on the upper slopes is common between December and February.

Combine the hike with a visit to the Tito Bustillo cave paintings in Ribadesella or the dramatic beaches at Gulpiyuri and Torimbia. The cider houses of nearby Villaviciosa provide an easy post-hike stop.
