Most visitors start from the village of La Plaza or nearby hamlets south of Oviedo. Regular trains run from Oviedo to La Plaza, followed by a short taxi or local bus to the trailhead. Drivers can follow the AS-242 road and park at signed pull-offs near the start of the main path. The approach roads are narrow but paved and suitable for standard cars.
The most popular route begins at approximately 600 m elevation and climbs steadily through beech woods before emerging onto open slopes. The final section crosses grassy ridges to the 1,427 m summit cairn. Allow three to four hours round-trip for the 8 km walk. The path is well-defined and requires no technical climbing, though the upper section can be muddy after rain.
Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers into April on north-facing slopes, while summer brings longer daylight and wildflowers. Autumn offers quieter trails and golden beech woods. Winter visits are possible only with proper snow equipment and experience.
After descending, continue to the historic mining town of Pola de Lena for traditional Asturian cider houses. The nearby Pre-Romanesque church of Santa Cristina de Lena is a short detour and a UNESCO site. Further afield, the Lakes of Covadonga and Picos de Europa National Park lie within an hour’s drive.
