Torrazzo Archaeological Site: Ancient Ruins in Calabria’s Ionian Coast
Explore the layered history at Torrazzo, a lesser-known archaeological site near Crotone revealing prehistoric and Magna…
Trace the overlapping Greek, Roman, and Byzantine remains of this distinctive structure within the vast Sybaris excavations.
Edificio B stands as one of the most intriguing excavated structures in the Parco Archeologico di Sibari, revealing successive occupations from the Archaic Greek period through Roman times. Located on the coastal plain of Calabria near the Crati River, the building’s foundations show evidence of multiple rebuilds after floods and invasions that reshaped ancient Sybaris.
Visitors can walk the perimeter and observe distinct construction phases. Lower courses use large limestone blocks typical of sixth-century BC Greek builders, while later Roman additions incorporate brick and mortar. A central courtyard and surrounding rooms suggest it may have served as a public or administrative building before being abandoned.
Unlike more famous Sicilian Greek sites, Sybaris offers quiet exploration with few crowds. The scale of the urban grid and the visible transition from Greek to Roman planning provide clear context for how the city evolved after its legendary destruction in 510 BC and later refounding as Thurii and then Copia.
Arrive via the SS106 coastal road; the site lies a short drive from the modern town of Cassano allo Ionio. A dedicated parking area sits near the main entrance to the archaeological park. Paths are mostly flat but can be uneven over exposed foundations, so sturdy footwear is essential. Combine the visit with the nearby Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Sibaritide to see artifacts recovered from Edificio B and surrounding insulae.
Spring and early autumn offer mild temperatures ideal for walking the extensive ruins. Summer visits require early morning arrival to avoid heat; winter months bring fewer visitors but occasional flooding on the plain.
