Phnom Chheh Veaek: Cambodia’s Quiet Mountain Summit for Hikers
Climb this northern Cambodian peak for sweeping views, cool breezes, and a peaceful escape from temple crowds.
Hike the gentle slopes of Đồi Tròn for sweeping views across Ratanakiri’s forests and distant border hills.
Đồi Tròn rises as a distinctive rounded peak in northeastern Cambodia’s Ratanakiri province. Its smooth contours and modest elevation make it an accessible day hike for travelers seeking quiet highland scenery away from more crowded sites. The mountain sits amid rolling plateaus and evergreen forest, offering clear sightlines toward the Vietnamese border on clear days.
Most visitors start from Ban Lung, the provincial capital. From there, a combination of motorbike taxi or rented vehicle covers the remaining distance along red-dirt roads that wind through rubber plantations and small Bunong villages. The final approach involves a short walk or 4×4 track to the lower slopes. Travelers coming from Phnom Penh should allow a full day by bus to Ban Lung followed by the local transfer.
The dry season from November through April brings reliable trails and cooler mornings ideal for early starts. During the rainy months the paths can become slick, though the surrounding greenery is at its lushest. Sunrise hikes reward visitors with mist-filled valleys and fewer insects.
A well-defined path circles the base before ascending steadily to the summit. The route passes through mixed deciduous forest and patches of bamboo. At the top, a small clearing provides 360-degree views of the surrounding hills and distant rice fields. The walk typically takes three to four hours round-trip for fit hikers, with plenty of spots to rest and watch birds or butterflies.
Combine the hike with visits to nearby waterfalls or the volcanic crater lake at Yak Loum. The region’s indigenous Bunong villages offer opportunities to learn about traditional resin tapping and elephant care programs. Markets in Ban Lung supply fresh fruit and local handicrafts for the return journey.

The trail is moderate with steady but not steep climbs. Most reasonably fit adults complete the round-trip in three to four hours.
A guide is recommended for first-time visitors to ensure safety and to learn about local ecology and customs along the route.
Bring ample water, sun protection, a hat, insect repellent, and a light rain jacket even in the dry season.
Older children accustomed to walking can manage the trail, but the full summit hike may be tiring for younger kids.
